Derek Herring grew up in Echols County and resides here with his wife of seventeen years, Dana. They have three children, Kyle, Cassie, and Lindsey.

Derek graduated from Echols County High School in 1989 and then went on to receive an associate’s degree in forestry from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Derek and his family are members at Wright’s Chapel United Methodist Church where he is Chairman of Trustees and serves on the Administrative Council Board. He serves on various local boards including the Echols Co. Board of Health, Echols Co. Farm Bureau Board of Directors, County Extension Advisory Board, Vocational Agriculture Advisory Board, and the Lake City Community College Advisory Board. He is also a member of the Echols County Lions Club, the local FFA Alumni chapter, and a team coach for the 4-H Shotgun Team. In addition, he is a member of numerous forestry organizations such as the Society of American Foresters, Georgia Forestry Association, and Florida Forestry Association.

Derek has served on the Echols County Board of Commissioners since he was elected in November 2007. He is a registered forester and is employed as an area manager for Canal Wood, LLC. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting, gardening, and spending time with his family.
